What is Kitchen Cabinet Refacing?

 
I have been asked several time to provide answers to different question about refacing and today I want to give the best possible answer to "what is cabinet refacing". Take a few minutes to read this insightful review that should enable you to make your decisions with ease.

Cabinet refacing is the process of changing some parts of the cabinets without removing them or restructuring them. This means the frames remain as is and you simply remove the old paint or coat on them and add a new one. In most cases it also involves removing the door and drawer fronts and replacing them with new ones.

So the cabinet boxes remain as it i.e. stay in their layout and they just get a new finish with something like veneer or laminate - depending on you taste and budget. You may also need to trim the cabinets.

The other best way to answer the question, what is cabinet refacing is to mention some of its benefits:

 

  • It is more affordable than replacing the whole cabinets.
  • It can help you coordinate a new wall paint or floor and end up with a totally new looking kitchen at a fraction of the cost.
  • It is faster so it is really convenient when you are on a tight schedule.
  • So it leaves you with enough time to focus on other parts of the kitchen
  • It is nearly easier to do-it-yourself than replacement. However my readers know that I am not one to favor DIY without any expert involvement - even if it's just to offer free advise before you DIY.

 

 

How much does it cost to reface your kitchen cabinets?

When I receive an email from people asking me a question like, what is the cost of refacing cabinets, I get really confused about how to answer it with a one worded answer. The truth is, it's just not possible. There are so many things to look at, which causes major variation from one project to the other.

For starters you would have to budget for the doors and drawers. Depending on whether you are doing it yourself or hiring a kitchen refacer the costs will vary significantly. The next thing to consider is the wood, paint, laminate or veneer (depending on what you prefer for resurfacing). It is also affected by your choices on options for replacing countertops and moldings.

One thing to mention is that it is far cheaper than a complete kitchen remodel. Refacing is an attractive alternative because it can cost 30-50% less than replacing existing cabinets with cabinets of comparable quality.

Now that I have given you a background let me give you some figures. For a kitchen with about 15 cabinets you will spend something like $8000. You can do it cheaper at between $1000 and $ 5000 if you are not looking for something hectic. You can also consider it per unit. In that case you can pay between $150 and $200 per drawer front and per door. This means that for a kitchen with about 30 pieces you could pay something like $6000.

If you choose to go with wood, the cost can go up by 25 percent more than laminate, however it is far better - in my opinion.
