Green Roofs

Extensive green roofs are commonly used on new buildings today to reduce surface water run-off into an overtaxed drainage system. They are grown using drought and wind resistant plants in a thin layer of soil on a buildings roof. The plants used are commonly sedums and low growing grasses which can add a great natural look to a building. There are many questions about this type of roof, here are 5 of the more commonly asked ones:

1. Okay, it looks pretty but are there any other benefits?

Aside from the flowers and seasonal changes in the foliage color nature roof has a number of building performance advantages. Reduced rainwater run-off, improved thermal performance of the roof in winter and summer, improved acoustic performance of the roof.

2. What seasonal changes will I see in a green roof?

The main flowering season in the Northern hemisphere is from May to August. Flower color ranges from white through yellow to pinks, reds and purples. Outside the flowering season foliage color extends the interest with shades of green, red, and yellow. Plant selection is the key to aesthetic performance.

3. What is the eventual height of the plants?

The majority of the plants commonly used will form a low growing layer on the roof surface which, when in flower, will be 100 to 150 mm high.

4. How often will the maintenance need to be carried out? Are weeds a problem?

Generally speaking, in the first year weeding will be required two to three times. In the second and subsequent years weeding will be required 1 to 2 times a year. As long as the system is correctly designed and installed, weeds or contaminants will occur at low levels but these can be easily dealt with by occasional weeding.

5. Will a green roof provide new habitat for local animal life?

Yes. Bees and any pollen collecting insects will be attracted by a green roof. It will also provide additional habitat for birdlife, particularly important in urban environments. A UK endangered species, the black redstart is increasing in numbers in the southeast and this bird has been using planted roof space as nesting habitat.
