Bevel Gauge

The bevel gauge is a measuring tool that has an adjustable sliding blade. The blade is adjusted to the dimensions of a desired angle and then it is locked in so that the exact measurement of the angle is able to be marked on a separate piece. The bevel gauge is also referred to as an angle bevel, sliding bevel, bevel square, sliding T-bevel, or adjustable try square.

The bevel gauge consists of a tongue (blade) that fits into a groove cut into the head of the stock (handle). Tongues vary in size, usually from seven inches to eighteen inches or more. The stock is always shorter than the length of the blade. The head of the stock contains a groove which fits the tongue of the bevel gauge. Most models allow for adjustments on the position of the tongue and the stock.

When using a bevel gauge, you want to make sure that the tongue is stretched against the piece you are working with and that the stock is held up against an edge. The tongue is then adjusted to the desired angle, anywhere between 0 and 180 degrees. Once the angle is selected, you will want to lock the angle in position by tightening the bolt and wing nut or lever device. Due to this locking device, the bevel gauge is great for matching existing angles.
